Chapter One
"Kyla! You don’t want to be late for your first day of 5th grade!"
"Just a minute!" Kyla answers, she clipped her gold choker around her neck. She never knew why, but she always wore the beautiful necklace with diamonds embedded in it. She brushes her long golden hair and puts on her jeans and t-shirt. When she walks downstairs, her mother has breakfast for her.
"If you hurry I will drive you to school early."
"Ok."
Once she gets to, school Kyla goes into her classroom. The teacher is there along with a few other kids.
"Pick your seat. You can sit anywhere you like." The teacher doesn’t look up. She is preoccupied with another student.
Kyla looked around. The desks are in groups of four. One group is already full of boys. Another group has only one girl at one of the desks, she is reading. Kyla decides to sit there.
"Hi." Kyla says to the girl as she starts writing her name on her name tag, "What’s your name?"
The girl doesn't look up but replies, "Kira. What’s yours?"
"Kyla."
When both girls look up, it seems like they are looking into a mirror.
"WHOA!!!" They whisper at the exact same time.
Kira goes up to the teacher and asks "Can I go to the bathroom?"
"Sure"
Kira leaves. Now Kyla goes up to the teacher and asks the same question.
"Sure-wait-didn’t I just say you could?”
"Oh, yeah." Kyla says in return and heads for the bathroom.
In the bathroom, Kira studies herself in the mirror. Kyla goes over and looks at their reflections. They are exactly the same!
"When is your birthday?" Kira asks suddenly curious.
"October 15."
"Mine too!" replies Kira.
"I was adopted in January when I was three." Kyla says getting excited.
"Me TOO!!!" says Kira practically shouting!
"This can only mean one thing." Kyla whispers, "We’re TWINS!"
Chapter Two
"Wow..." Kira says, "I never thought I had a twin."
"Me neither."
"Oh-my-gosh!!! This is so cool!" They both shout at the exact same time.
After school, they discover they live on different streets, in the same neighborhood. Since it is Friday, they decide to go to Kyla’s secret hideout in the woods. Kyla shows Kira her choker.
"I had one like that. One day when I came here, in the woods, I found a little girl, and there was a HUGE cut on her leg. She told me to give her my choker, as if it would heal her cut, or something. The next day she was gone, but she left my choker. It wouldn’t come unhooked, and it wouldn’t fit over my head. I think she did something to it."
"Weird. Can you show me the spot where you found her?"
"Sure."
Five minutes later, they are at the spot where Kira found the girl.
"Here is my ‘choker’." Kira says quietly to Kyla as she pulls the necklace out of her pocket.
It isn't really a necklace. It is more like an oval shaped golden ring.
Then all of a sudden, Kyla’s necklace starts to glow. Kira and Kyla both stare, open-mouthed, at the floating necklace. They are amazed when it falls to the ground, they gasp as it lay there with an odd eerie glow. Then the trees start moving and all of a sudden, a doorway appears!
"Let’s go inside!" Kyla says excitedly.
Kira is hesitant. "I don’t know, I mean this doorway just appeared. Isn’t that a little weird?"
"No-well yeah, but I want to explore it! Please Kira! Will you come with me?"
"Fine."
Then they enter the door.
Chapter 3
When they go through the door they enter a magical world. They are in a golden meadow and there is a little girl, who looked about 6 or 7 years old, with long golden hair, picking little golden buttercups.
“Kyla! That is the girl from the woods!” Kira whispers excitedly.
“Weird.” Kyla whispers back.
"Um, hi, where are we?" Kyla asks the little girl.
The girl looks up and with a surprised look on her face, she runs down the meadow. Both the girls run after her.
They cross a small brook, go through a garden with every kind of fruit and vegetable you can imagine, and under a tree as tall as the sky.
Soon they come across a beautiful golden castle with large stained glass windows, and emeralds, rubies, sapphires and diamonds in the walls.
"Wow," Kira says, "Everything here is so........gold."
"I know." Kyla replies
Just then, a woman comes out of the castle. Her golden hair is in a braid down her back, and her silk slippers and gown are gold as well. She gasps and runs back in. A few moments later, thousands of people came out of the castle. They all looked like normal humans except they have glimmery pink and orange wings on their backs.
"Welcome to the land of the Sunpixis," a tall man laughs. He looked a lot like Kira.
Eventually when Kyla finds her voice, she whispers "Did you say Sun-PIXIES? You don’t look like pixies to me."
The man laughs again. "Not pixies! We are Sunpixis. Long ago the ones before us came from the sun. The sun is our power source. If the sun dies, we die."
He and a tall woman step forward. "You are not human," he says happily to the girls, "I am your father and this is your mother, you are our daughters. Princesses of the Sunpixis."
Kyla and Kira stare at them in disbelief.
No wonder they seem so familiar! Kira thinks
"Welcome Home." their parents say, "Welcome Home."
Chapter 4
When Kyla and Kira’s parents place what used to be their chokers on top of their heads, they realize the chokers are tiaras. Then the girls feel their shoulder blades growing. Only it wasn’t their shoulder blades. They are WINGS!! They are like fairy wings, but they are the colors of the sunset.
A week before, Kyla and Kira would have never thought they would have been princesses of the Sunpixis.
Actually, a week before, they didn’t even know each other even existed!
The girls happily settle in with the Sunpixis. One day when Kyla was practicing her sword fighting in the meadow, a strange dark mist hangs over the hill. It seemed to be killing the plants and it is spreading fast. She runs back to her father and showed him the mist. Afterwards Kyla and Kira overhear their parents talking.
"What are we going to do?" asks the Queen.
"I don’t know what we are going to do, but I do know one thing," the King murmurs, "Darknesse is upon us!"
"What is the Darknesse?" Kira asks, entering the room.
Her parents jumped.
"Well," her father tells them, "A long time ago there was a Sunpixi named Rolan. He was one of the messengers. One day he fell through one of the portals connecting our world to earth. He stumbled around, wondering where he was. Then he saw a mortal girl and fell in love with her, she would not be accepted by the Sunpixis because she was human, and not immortal, like us. Her name was Annabell. When Rolan returned to our world, he brought Annabell with him. The king banished Annabell, and Rolan left to be with Annabell. They went back to Earth. Then a dragon, named Darknesse found them. Darknesse took them to his home in the opposite corner of the universe and convinced them that he would accept them for who they were and not if they were immortal or not. But, he really wanted to recruit them because he will die if sun hits him. He wants to get power and rule over all the humans on Earth. We, the Sunpixis, stop him from ruling Earth because we keep the sun from burning out."
“It’s also why we had to give you up,” the queen says sadly, “He would’ve killed you if we kept you here. He never found you on Earth.”
“Did you give us the chokers?” Kyla asks curiously.
“Yes. They would turn into your tiaras if they encountered Sunpixi magic. That’s why yours closed when you found that girl, Kira.”
"So what are we going to do about Darknesse?" Kira asks.
"Well, girls, we need to fight him."
Chapter 5
The next week, the girls train to fight Darknesse. They practice with swords, bow and arrows, and shields. Kira, the clumsy one, isn’t very good with the sword, and Kyla, the stronger one, keeps breaking the string on the bow. So they switch.
The item Kira is taking to battle is the bow and arrow, Kyla’s is the sword.
Before the battle, their mother gives them each a healing potion. “Remember,” she says “You need to give the person you are healing the exact amount. Too much or too little will kill them.
That afternoon, everyone in the army loads into the ships and set off to the corner of the universe, where Darknesse lives. The journey is long and they have to sleep on the spaceships. The last thing Kyla and Kira could do is go to sleep.
"What if we can’t beat him? What if he kills mom and dad?" Kira fretts.
"We can beat him and we will beat him." Kyla says, "I just know we can. We will do it together."
"OK. Kyla, I miss being human. There wasn’t any danger."
“Me too, Kira. But being a Sunpixi is even better than being human!”
That afternoon, they get to Darknesse’s castle. They wait until night to attack. That way it will be easier to sneak into the castle. When the sky darkens into a deep purple, the army piles out of the ships and very slowly marches up to the castle. Kira and Kyla are in the back. The chill in the dark creeps up their spines. Kyla shivers. It isn’t because she was cold though. It's because she's scared. She tries not to act like it in front of Kira though. She knows that Kira is even more scared. They slowly crept inside the castle. When they get inside the dark mist was so thick, they can hardly see the people if front of them. They can almost hear the silence. A few minutes later, they are in front of a huge iron door. The troops march right up to it and open the door. Just inside was a HUGE dragon.
"Well, well, well. Look at what we have here!" the dragon says.
At one look Kira knows it is Darknesse.
He has dark purple scales, black horns and surrounding him, is a thick black fog.
The Sunpixi troops start attacking the guards.
"Well, well, well. Look at what we have here!" the dragon says.

Kyla draws her sword, Kira just stands there staring at the giant dragon.
"Kira!" Kyla whispers.
Kira looks at Kyla and says "Can you hear them? I can hear Rolan and Annabell! They are beneath the floor. Darknesse is on a trapdoor. We have to save them!"
"Well, what do we do?"
"I don’t know! How about….never mind, it won’t work."
"What??"
"Well, I could distract it-him-it and you would need to kill it-him."
"OK, let’s try."
Kira shoots her arrows one at a time close to the dragon’s head. Darknesse spins around and faces the girl. He lowers his head to attack. Kyla slowly creeps up behind him and raises her sword. She leaps off the ground and in one stroke swiftly cuts the dragon’s head off. The wound starts spewing a dark gas. In less than 30 seconds, Darknesse is no more.
"Come on!" Kira says kneeling towards the trap door. She pulls on the handle. Nothing happens. Kyla then tries. Again, nothing. They both pull at the handle as hard as they can and the door does not even budge.
"Well," Kyla says, as she pulls at a padlock, "It needs a key."
Chapter 6
Kira and Kyla search the whole room for the key. It seems to be nowhere! Then Kyla looks up.
"I see it!" she cries happily.
There it is. Above their heads on the very highest point of the ceiling on a piece of thread is a golden key, embedded with rubies and emeralds.
"How will we get it?" Kira asks nervously.
Kyla looks around. She suddenly remembers the rope she had packed in her bag. "Give me one of your arrows!" She says excitedly. When Kira hands her an arrow, Kyla ties the rope to the end. "Can you shoot the arrow up so the rope goes over the rafters?" She asks Kira.
"I think so." Kira pulls the bow-string and releases. The arrow shoots over the beam and comes back down on the other side. Kyla grabs the rope and unties the arrow. Then she ties a knot and pulls it tight. Kira starts climbing up the rope.
"Be careful!" Kyla says nervously.
"I am! I almost got it-whoa!" Kira shouts as an arrow whizzed through the air. It cut through the rope like a knife through butter. She falls to the ground.
Kyla spins around and sees a man behind her. He has just shot the arrow.
"WHAT DID YOU DO?" Kyla cries.
"I just took care of a little problem." The man says.
"Kira isn’t a problem! She’s my sister! Rolan, I thought you would be on our side after Darknesse was killed."
"I’m not Rolan! Rolan is the one you killed a few minutes ago!"
"He-you-but, how?"
I knew you ‘pixies were coming!" He sneers, "I convinced him to switch bodies with me!"
"Kira!" Kyla whispers.
Kira looks at Kyla and says "Can you hear them? I can hear Rolan and Annabell! They are beneath the floor. Darknesse is on a trapdoor. We have to save them!"

Chapter 7Darknesse laughs and runs from the room. Once he is gone, Kyla slowly walks over to Kira. She is in a daze because she couldn’t figure out how Darknesse knew they were coming.
"Kira!" she whispers softly.
Kira doesn’t move. In fact, Kyla isn’t sure if Kira is even breathing!
"Kira! Wake up!"
Kyla didn’t know what to do. There was nothing she can do to save Kira. Then she remembers the potion! She rummages around in her backpack. Finally she finds the little glass vial. The purple liquid is bubbling inside. She uncorks it and pours some into Kira’s mouth.
Their mom warned them that it takes a while before the potion actually starts to work.
Kyla gets up and starts pacing the room. How will she get the key? She finally decides that she would use her sword to knock the key off. Then she decided that it isn’t the best idea. What if her sword got stuck? What if she misses?
She grabs Kira’s bow and picks up an arrow. She isn’t very good, but she aims and fires. The arrow clinks against the key and makes it swing. One more arrow sends it swinging right off the hook. She holds out her hand, but it lands right next to it with a clang off the floor.
Kyla races over to the trap door and inserts the key into the lock. The lock clicks open as she twists it. Then she slowly lifts the wooden flap on the ground. She peers into the gaping hole. She can’t see the bottom.
It’s probably not that far down, she thinks. Just to be sure, she drops the key down. The metal clinks against the wall. Kyla thinks that it hits the floor and then she jumps into the hole.
Kyla keeps falling. The hole is way longer than she had expected. A dark thought crosses her mind. What if it is just a hole? What if it doesn’t go anywhere?
Finally, Kyla falls on a bed. I wonder who sleeps here. She thinks.
She wanders around the dark room for a while until she finds a light switch. A bright glow fills the room. One look around, and Kyla knows it is a cave. The ceiling is stone and so are the floor and walls. Kyla looks up and sees the dark hole which she fell into. She can’t see any light from the top.
"What are you doing here?" a voice whispers behind her.
Kyla spins around and sees a young woman with black hair.
"Annabell?" Kyla hears a curious voice from behind her. She spins around, again, and sees Kira hanging from the rope, just above the bed.
"YOU’RE OK!" Kyla shouts.
"Of course I am!" Kira says.
"Yeah, but, don’t you remember what happened?"
"You used the potion on me and now I’m better!" Kira finishes, and drops down from the rope, "Annabell, don’t leave!"
"You are the-the-," the young woman stammers.
"The what?" Kira says softly.
"The ones Darknesse warned me about before you killed him!"
"What? You think… Oh no!" Kyla murmurs.
"What?" Annabell asks.
"Annabell, we didn’t kill Darknesse… we killed Rolan. Darknesse switched bodies with him. I’m so sorry!" Kira tells her.
"No, not Rolan!" Annabell shrieks and falls onto the bed, weeping.
"Annabell, will you help us? We need to kill Darknesse. I bet you know where everything is down here!" Kyla says.
“Why should I help you? After all, you killed my husband!”
"Kira!" she whispers softly.

“Fine.” Annabell says warily, “Follow me.”
Chapter 8
"Should we follow her?" Kira says nervously.
"Of course we should. Annabell is on our side now!" Kyla replies.
The hall is long and dark.
"Annabell, where are we going?" Kyla asks suddenly.
"To Darknesse’s lair."
"Oh."
"Stop!" Kira says, "We need a plan!"
"You’re right." agrees Annabell.
"Ok," Kyla begins, "Annabell will lead us to Darknesse and then she will go into the lair and act like she is still on his side then we will come in and I will kill him with my sword."
“Let me see your sword. Only pure silver will kill Darknesse.”

Kyla hands Annabell her sword.
“It is silver.”
“Good.”
"Alright," Annabell whispers, "The lair is this next door."
Annabell walks into the lair and starts talking to Darknesse, disguised as Rolan. "Hello Rolan. What are you working on?"
"Well, I-Annabell-I need to tell you something."
"Yes, I know Rolan is dead, you can go back to your original form."
"Oh, you do? I’ll change back now."
Mysterious whispering comes from the room. Kyla slowly goes up to the door and then barges in with Kira behind her.
In the room, Annabell has a sword pointed at the girls’ throats, and Darknesse looks as dark as ever.
"Annabell, you betrayed us!" Kira cries.
"Yes, and I am going to get revenge on the ones who killed my husband!" Annabell then swings her sword and it clangs against Kyla’s. The ringing of the two swords echoes down the hall.
"Enough!" Darknesse shouts, throwing both girls to opposite sides of the room. "Annabell, stop!" he says slinking over to her, as she tries to get off the ground.
"I will never stop untill I get my revenge!" she snarls as she swings her sword at him. Darknesse hits her against the wall, knocking her unconscious.
"As for you…" he turns towards Kyla, picking her up, ready to throw her against the wall.
"OH NO YOU DON’T!" Kira shouts, pulling the string of her bow tight, and then with a whoosh the arrow embeds itself into the giant dragon’s neck.
Darknesse looks surprised for a moment, and then falls to the ground in a heap, dropping Kyla onto the cold stone floor.
"KYLA!" Kira shouts rushing over to her sister.
Kyla sits up and looks around. "You killed him!" she says in amazement, “Wait, we’re glowing!”
Annabell walks into the lair and starts talking to Darknesse, disguised as Rolan. "Hello Rolan. What are you working on?"

“Cool!” Kyla shouts. “With Darknesse gone, there isn’t any darkness to stop us from glowing!”
“Annabell is dead. Darknesse broke her neck.” Kira says quietly.
“It's too bad Darknesse made her so evil.”
“Yeah, but at least she isn't trying to kill us anymore.”
Together they walk down the hall and climb up the rope. When they walk out of the castle, everyone is cheering for them.
"You’re heroes!" everyone shouts, "You’re heroes!"
